UFC 328: Khamzat Chimaev Set for Grudge Match Title Defence Against Sean Strickland
A Collision of Titans in Newark
The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has officially confirmed a high-stakes middleweight title clash for the main event of UFC 328. Unbeaten champion Khamzat Chimaev is slated to defend his crown against former titleholder Sean Strickland on May 9 in Newark, New Jersey.
Chimaev, 31, who seized the throne from Dricus du Plessis last August, enters the Octagon with a flawless 15-0 record. In contrast, the 35-year-old Strickland arrives with the momentum of a dominant victory over Anthony Hernandez, though his career has been marked by both championship glory and seven hard-fought losses.
Beyond the Octagon: A Polarising Rivalry
The bout is expected to be one of the most volatile promotional cycles in recent memory. Strickland, an American known for his unfiltered and often inflammatory rhetoric, has frequently targeted Chimaev’s faith and background. Chimaev, a devout Muslim born in Russia, represents the antithesis of Strickland’s outspoken persona.
The tension reached a boiling point last month when Strickland’s microphone was cut during a post-fight press conference as he began a tirade directed at the champion. UFC CEO Dana White, acknowledging the animosity, joked that "extra security" would be a prerequisite for the fight week festivities.
Arnold Allen Returns to Action
In addition to the Newark headliner, the UFC announced the return of British featherweight standout Arnold Allen. The Ipswich-born fighter will look to rebound from a January defeat when he faces the surging Brazilian, Melquizael Costa, at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas on May 16.
The Featherweight Stakes:
Arnold Allen (Ranked #8): Seeking to snap a career-low momentum after a loss to Jean Silva.
Melquizael Costa (Ranked #12): Currently on a six-fight winning streak, including two consecutive stoppages.
Format: The contest is scheduled as a five-round main event, offering both men a path toward the division's top five.
The Road to "UFC White House"
These bouts serve as the vanguard for a summer of high-profile mixed martial arts, culminating in the uniquely branded "UFC White House" event scheduled for June 14. As the promotion ramps up its global schedule, the Chimaev-Strickland rivalry stands as the centerpiece of a narrative that blends elite athleticism with deep-seated personal conflict.
"A fight people have been waiting for a long time. Strickland looked incredible in his last fight. How much security do you think we're going to need?" — Dana White, UFC CEO
