FIFA Sanctions Nigeria and DR Congo Following World Cup Qualifier Misconduct

Fan Misconduct Leads to Fines

FIFA has officially sanctioned both Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) following disciplinary breaches during their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification playoff match held in November 2025. According to the disciplinary overview released by the global governing body, the penalties stem from the conduct of supporters during the high-stakes encounter, which saw DR Congo advance on penalties.

The Sanctions Breakdown:

  • Nigeria Football Federation (NFF): Fined 1,000 Swiss francs for the throwing of objects by supporters. This was ruled a violation of Articles 17 and 17.2.b of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.

  • Congo DR Football Association (FECOFA): Fined 5,000 Swiss francs for the use of laser pointers or similar electronic devices by fans. This act contravened Article 17.2.d of the code.

Silence on Ineligible Player Protest

While the fines for fan behavior were confirmed, the FIFA report notably omitted any updates regarding the Nigeria Football Federation’s formal protest concerning the alleged use of ineligible players by DR Congo.

The NFF had previously petitioned FIFA, accusing FECOFA of fraudulent registration and misleading authorities regarding the citizenship status of certain players who featured in the playoff. As of this report, FIFA has not announced a decision on the merit of the NFF's complaint, leaving the result of the match—and the subsequent qualification path—unchanged for now.

Looking Ahead: The Intercontinental Playoff

Despite the ongoing legal shadow cast by the NFF's petition, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is moving forward with its World Cup ambitions. The team has already named its squad for the upcoming intercontinental playoff scheduled for later this month.

DR Congo is set to face the winner of the match between Jamaica and New Caledonia. The victor of that final clash will secure one of the coveted remaining slots for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
